Summary:

Step 1

Hello there!

Take a moment to settle down. When you feel calm, get a mental image of yourself as the you that you'd like most to be.

What's your appearance?

How do you carry yourself?

What are you doing in the image?

Step 2

What did you feel as you imagined yourself as you want to be?

If you couldn't connect to an image, then think about some of your childhood visions of yourself as a grown up.

What was that person like?

Step 3

Did you realize that the person you imagined is already inside of you?

Like the rest of us, it may just need a little help to pull it out. That's a normal part of growing up, but it takes you to seek out the right people who can help you see something in yourself that you didn't know was there.

We're not meant to see this stuff. We're too close to the situation. They can be objective.

With that in mind, ask one of the following for time to talk to you about how they see you and if they have suggestions for improvement:
*boss
*current or former school teacher
*college instructor
*coach
*mentor, CASA, or Guardian ad Litem
*trusted friend
*trusted relative

Relax. They’re not going to slam you or humiliate you.

Put this into perspective. Most of us welcome the chance to be encouraging, and we want to guide people toward the very best they can be.

Will you ask for time to speak with someone who can give you this sort of guidance?

Step 4

Now it's your turn.

Practice the way you would like to ask the person for insight about one or two things that would improve your current situation.

In fact, you could ask it like this: I want to grow more as a person, and I'm hoping you could give me some insight. Could you show me something I'm doing well and one or two things that I could do better?

You’re going to have to trust us here. What are you waiting for?

You know you got this!

Step 5

Make sure you thank the person when you've finished the conversation.

Do something nice for them, too, like a thank you note, text or email. You could also buy them a coffee or ice cream, etc. as a small token of appreciation.

What's your plan? How will you thank them?
