Goal: this Cognitive Trail will improve the ability to outsmart emotions that result in painful outcomes (Blind Spots).

Description: 'Blind Spots' takes trekkers through specific steps to help outsmart tendencies toward friends and loved ones that are hurtful.

Summary:

Step 1

Hi there! Welcome back!

Hey, did you do anything yesterday that made you see yourself in a more positive way?

If so, what did you do?

If not, what are you planning and when are you going to do it?

Step 2

We talked about value yesterday. Yours.

Understanding your value helps to deflect the hurtful blows all of us receive now and then. It makes us stronger, more resilient and more at peace with ourselves because other people's opinions of us don't have the same effect.

But that degree of confidence often takes time to achieve.

At this point in your life, how do you react when someone says or does something unkind or unfair to you?

Step 3

The fastest way to become confident about who you are is to refuse to allow others to have a negative hold over you because of their unkind words or actions. That's an inside thing, not an outside action.

Think of it this way. Their words or actions were mean, but that doesn't change who you are. Your intrinsic value is untouched.

When someone is mean, put a different narrative in your mind as quickly as possible.

It could something like: "I know who I am, and I know you're wrong about me. I'm not going to prove you right by stooping down to your level. I'm going to use this encounter to strengthen my belief in myself."

What do you think about that?

Step 4

Write something hopeful about yourself. The point is to move on with good thoughts in your mind.

Here's an example: "I hope I'll be viewed by myself and others as strong, smart, brave, kind and a real friend. I wish myself well in recognizing my innate value, and I aim to always appreciate that part of me. It's the best part of me."

Hey, that was just an example. Your 'something hopeful' should be meaningful to you and you alone.

Step 5

Go to the video icon and listen to Rascal Flatts' 'Stand'. Country genre. Good tune.

Let us know what you thought about the message when you've finished.

Step 6

Now treat yourself to something nice.

Some examples include:
* join a pick-up basketball game
* buy yourself an ice cream or other special treat (one that won't get you into trouble later)
* ask a friend to join you for a hamburger, taco or a movie
* go for a walk in a place that makes you happy
* play music that puts a smile on your face

You get it. Now go do it. Check ya later!
