Summary:

Step 1

Welcome back!

Today let's touch on the antisocial part of social media.

Rumors. Gossip. Saying things that are untrue or blowing something completely out of proportion. Worse. It was done on social media for the world to judge.

Ouch!

These are more ways to make a person feel utterly humiliated. Have you had any of this happen to you?

Step 2

If you have, and many of us have, then take heart.

The situation truly will blow over. Give it time.

Whatever you do, do NOT fuel the gossip by responding angrily. Keep your responses short without pointing fingers.

It's helpful to practice what you want to say to someone before you respond. Have someone objective read your email or post before you hit 'send.'

That's called 'Deflate Gate.' A response that shows a lack of emotion takes the wind out of the drama so it may die out more quickly.

How much could this approach help your situation?

Step 3

Has this happened to you recently?

If so, take a moment and practice a clear and positive response in the space provided.

Step 4

Once your side is out there, don't add any more than you absolutely must. Give it your best to let it go.

Show the world they can't get to you. Go about your business.

Don't hide out. Keep your chin up. Smile confidently.

Defeat the rumor mill by remaining true to yourself. Does this apply to your situation?

Step 5

Whatever you do, do not respond a second time. Bite your tongue if you have to but don't bad mouth anybody.

The point of gossip is to inflame and create drama. If they don't see it getting to you, then there's no drama. So they go elsewhere.

Will you stick to this no-drama plan?

Step 6

Finally, be careful who you talk to and what you say.

If you're on the drama circuit strongly consider removing yourself from those people.

If you stay, the same thing is likely to happen again. Best to move on with your dignity intact.

There are other friends out there who are trustworthy. Take your time to get to know them, and don't tell anything to a new friend that you wouldn't want to see posted where the whole world can view it, too.

Agreed?

Step 7

Let’s lighten it up a bit.

Our friend Kris recommended a song for you. We liked it, too. It's a good way to maintain that image of feeling free, unentangled from past hurts and insults.

Head up to the video icon and watch the music video, 'I Hope You Dance', by Lee Ann Womack, paying close attention to the lyrics.

Select 'Successful' when you've finished.
