Step 1

Hi!

Let's start off today by thinking about one thing that makes you happy.

So...what makes you glad right now?

Step 2

Keep that happy thought in mind as you go through today's steps, which are meant to ignite the kind of hope you can hang onto.

To grasp that hope, you must be willing to confront the fears and very real obstacles in your way.

Simply doing that helps you recognize your 'competitor' and determine how to outsmart it.

Start with this: In one or two words, describe what makes you nervous and causes you to second guess your vision.

Step 3

Again in one or two words, describe obstacles in your way that you haven't found a way around yet.

Step 4

This is how you reach out and grab the kind of hope you can hang onto: get a mental picture of yourself as you've always imagined you were meant to be.

When you're ready, answer the following questions in the space provided:

What expression did 'the you you've always imagined' have?

How did this 'you' carry yourself?

Do people react to this 'you' in any special way?

How did you feel seeing the 'you you've always imagined'?

Step 5

Go look in the mirror. Look hard because those qualities are already inside you.

Would you agree that maybe what you need are opportunities and people who can bring them to the surface and the hope that it will really happen?

How optimistic are you at this time regarding your future plans?

If hope comes and goes for you, as it does for a lot of people, then take heart. It can return even stronger when you least expect it.

During the Great Depression, many people lost hope when the stock market crashed. They lost their jobs and their homes. They were doing all they could to survive.

Then along came a horse...a small, mistreated colt that people thought could only lose...but he showed them what a tough winner he was...and he gave millions of people in America hope that they could start dreaming again.

They identified with that horse now famously known as 'Seabiscuit'.

Head to the video icon and watch the clips from 'Seabiscuit' and think about the part you could play in reigniting your own hope.

It helps to keep your focus on WHO you want to BE not simply WHAT you want to DO to earn a living or get out of your current predicament. In other words, what's in your heart?

Keep your focus on WHO, and the rest will begin to fall into place.

They can be a mentor, CASA, coach, teacher, instructor, high school counselor, pastor, older & trusted friend, supportive relative, support services counselor at college , college instructor or adviser, college financial aid officer, etc.

Go ahead. Pick someone. Talk to them. See where the conversations point you.

In the next 24 hours, will you reach out and arrange to speak with the person you've chosen to talk to? Texting is fine if you're unable to meet with them.
