Summary: Investing in the fruit of kindness.

Step 1

Read Galatians 5:22-23:

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."

Are you ready to make an investment in the Fruit of Kindness?

Step 2

Read Mark 14:1-11

"Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”

While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.

Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.

“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over."

Step 3

Why do you believe Jesus says of Mary's action: "She has done a beautiful thing to me"?

Write you answer in the space provided.

Step 4

In these short verses we see four vastly different reactions to Jesus:

The chief priests who want to kill Him
Mary who pours herself out to Him
Followers who criticize 'extravagant' devotion to Him
Judas, a close friend, who betrays Him

How important to you is it to develop a relationship with Jesus that is more like Mary's and less like the other three?

Step 5

Go to 'DOCUMENTS' are read Oswald Chambers comments on Mark 14:1-11.

Select 'Successful' when you are finished.

Step 6

Oswald states:

"His purpose is not the development of a person— His purpose is to make a person exactly like Himself, and the Son of God is characterized by self-expenditure. If we believe in Jesus, it is not what we gain but what He pours through us that really counts."

Describe how Jesus' life was one of self-expenditure. Be specific.

Step 7

Oswald continues:

'Our Lord is filled with overflowing joy whenever He sees any of us doing what Mary did— not being bound by a particular set of rules, but being totally surrendered to Him.'

How often do you find yourself in a state of being totally surrendered to Jesus?

Step 8

Regarding your ability to give yourself fully to Jesus, is there anything you would like to speak to Him about or to repent of?

If so, you can do so privately, or in the space provided.

Step 9

Oswald concludes:

'Now is the time for us to break “the flask” of our lives, to stop seeking our own satisfaction, and to pour out our lives before Him. Our Lord is asking who of us will do it for Him?'

Will you do that for Him?

Step 10

Is there a particular blessing you have received that, like Mary, you would like to 'pour out' to Him right now?

If so, describe what you are going to do and when you are going to do it.

Step 11

Is there anything you would like to thank Jesus for?

If so, you can do so privately, or in the space provided.

Step 12

How much has this Trail increased His fruit of Kindness in your present disposition?
